Groundings: The Treasure Within Us All

  • Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, Ignatius Hall 1079 Summit Avenue Saint Paul, MN, 55105 United States (map)

Groundings is a monthly lecture series offered September through May by Sacred Ground in collaboration with Loyola Spirituality Center and the Ignatian Spirituality Center at Saint Thomas More. Groundings is open to anyone interested in deepening their spirituality, their capacity for deep listening, and their contemplative engagement in our world.

Our Groundings season begins September 17 with Katherine Piderman who will share the wisdom and invitations gleaned from Mayo Clinic’s Hear My Voice research project.

We all hold a treasure of spiritual experiences which have blessed and challenged us. What happens when we explore, understand, integrate, preserve, and share these experiences with someone we can trust? Come discover the invitation Mayo Clinic’s Hear My Voice research project holds for all of us.

Mayo Clinic’s Hear My Voice research project invited patients with advanced illnesses to meet individually with a chaplain and review and summarize their lives using a spiritual lens. Katherine Piderman will share her experience with this study, including the interview questions used, selections from the interviews, and tributes from those involved. We will practice with the Hear My Voice questions and discuss possibilities going forward.

A blessing in itself, this research project is intended as “a mustard seed” for others to use in their personal and professional lives.

Katherine (Kate) Piderman was born and raised in Vancouver, BC, Canada but has lived in the midwestern United States most of her adult life.  Kate’s education includes Master’s degrees in education, pastoral studies, and scripture, and a PhD in psychology.  A Catholic laywoman, Kate served for 20 years in parishes in rural Illinois and for over 25 years as a chaplain, mostly at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Kate is an associate professor in the Mayo College of Medicine and has been actively involved in research and education in spirituality and health.  She has taught in many settings - regionally, nationally, and internationally.  Kate will integrate some learnings from a research project called, Hear My Voice, into our time together today. Completing her training at Sacred Ground in 2020, Kate is a spiritual director and feels blessed to accompany people seeking to explore and deepen their faith in the midst of the complexities of life.  She loves the outdoors and is often surprised and delighted by the many ways God winks at her when she is still enough to notice.

Registration is helpful, but not required. A $20 suggested donation to help cover costs may be paid at the door or online.

We are happy to be able to offer a live Zoom link to those who are unable to attend this event in person. You will need to request the zoom link when you register.
