Going Through: Supporting Directees in a Deconstructing Faith

Spiritual Directors can be invaluable companions for someone who is going through a “Deconstruction” of their faith. Deconstruction is often a time of profound disorientation: The faith you held dear has stopped making sense. God feels far away or unreal. Disappointment in church is felt keenly. There is often a deep sense of loss and of being lost.

The wilderness is just one of the rich metaphors for this part of the faith journey. How can a Spiritual Director help directees “Go Through” and re-orient themselves in the landscape of their faith and life? Join us for this online panel discussion with Carolyn Kolovitz, Jane Pellizzer, and Tod Twist. We will pool together our knowledge and experiences to give participants language, understanding, and resources as they accompany directees through a faith that has left them feeling lost.

Carolyn Kolovitz is a spiritual director at Loyola Spirituality Center. She also regularly leads guided meditations in spirituality circles, Sunday services, and retreats as a way to ground people in the wisdom of their lived experience. Since 2000, she has been using the Enneagram as a guide for growing in understanding and compassion for self and others. In 2023, she completed Anne Mureé’s Full Circle Enneagram courses. She has a BS in Psychology, an MS in Women’s Studies and an MA in Theology as well as a graduate certificate in Spiritual Direction.

Jane Pellizzer is a certified Spiritual Director through Sacred Ground Center for Spirituality. She facilitates SoulCollage® classes and retreats and she recently added typing and coaching using the transformative power of the Enneagram to her toolkit. In her free time she enjoys reading, organizing, time at her cabin in the woods, and hanging out with her friends, husband and their grown kids/partners/pets. Tod Twist trained as a Spiritual Director through the program at the Franciscan Spirituality Center in La Crosse, WI. He works in building maintenance at St. Paul’s Monastery as his "day job," and he likes it a lot. He was a grad student in biblical studies for a long time before that, and then a stay-at-home dad before he began working at the Monastery in late 2019. Tod writes: “After things went differently in mid-life than I thought they were supposed to, spiritual direction was a big part of my learning to live the life that was actually happening for me, as opposed to the life that I thought I was supposed to be living. It took a long time for me to adjust, and I needed others to listen to me as I trudged through it all.    Aside from marrying my beloved spouse and being blessed with our two children, the best thing that has ever happened in my life is growing in my experience of God’s presence. For me, that experience of God’s presence comes along different pathways—some traditional, some unexpected.”
