Creating Genuine Connections through Group Spiritual Direction

Diane Millis & Christine Luna Munger

People are more connected than ever before. In an age of likes and tweets, how might we as spiritual directors reimagine group spiritual direction? This professional development day will examine the key movements that distinguish group spiritual direction from other small group formats, explore approaches to GSD that can be used in a wide array of settings, and engage participants in conversation about elements of inclusion and contemplation that are conducive to creating safe, sacred spaces.

Diane Millis and Christine Luna Munger share an enduring commitment to introducing group spiritual direction to a wider public. Their collaboration began in 2002 at the College of Saint Benedict through their work with Companions on a Journey, a spiritual formation initiative funded by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.

Since then, through the Journey Conversations Project, Diane has worked with leaders in education, ministry, health care, and other settings to bring group spiritual companioning to their communities. Diane currently teaches at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities.

Christine Luna Munger teaches at Saint Catherine University where she serves as coordinator of the spiritual direction certificate program. She offers courses in Group Spiritual Direction and has presented on GSD for Spiritual Directors International.

Focusing: An Inner Journey to Healing and Wisdom

Sue Hahn & Bev O’Connor

“Focusing is a natural skill that many of us have to learn to access/ It’s a way of being in touch with how we carry important issues inside ourselves, of listening to our body with compassion… and befriending what’s going on inside” (an introduction to Focusing and its use in Spiritual Direction by Lynne Brown).

How can we learn to be present to our body? How can we listen to its wisdom? Focusing teaches us to become aware of how our body communicates with us through sensations, images, words, and /or sounds. Nurturing this relationship can be insightful and healing. Participants will be introduced to Focusing and being the process of learning how to listen and nurture a relationship with their body.
